The pressure on Turkey’s beleaguered military has intensified after eight senior commanders were formally charged today with trying to topple the Islamist-rooted government in a coup. The move further raised the stakes as the army’s chief of staff, General Ilker Basbug, prepared to meet Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for crisis talks aimed at defusing tensions provoked by the detention of 50 senior officers on February 22.
